Sharjah 24: Sharjah Girl Guides (SGG) is continuing efforts to engage its young members in a wide variety of virtually held activities to develop their talents, sharpen their communication skills and raise their awareness about the importance of charity and community work during the Holy Month.
As part of their Ramadan programme, SGG will host an ‘Arabic Calligraphy and Zayed’ workshop on May 1, on the WEBEX platform. The activity will engage 20 Guides and Senior Guides in learning the techniques of Arabic calligraphy and share with them the unique elements of celebrated artistic tradition of the Islamic world.
Marking Zayed Humanitarian Day, commemorated every year on the 19th day of Ramadan, the workshop will also highlight the life and legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed through an art workshop where participants will create artworks inspired by the humanitarian quotes of the Father of the Nation, as a creative way to express their gratitude for his leading legacy of generosity and goodness towards others.
Ramadan competition
SGG’s virtual competition ‘Be Helpful’ runs from April 19 to May 6. Designed for Guides divided into two teams of five participants in each, the competition aims to motivate them to volunteer and give back to community, help needy people and young school students, help with table setting at home, reduce food waste, and finally, memorise the Holy Quran.
The work and progress of the two competing teams will be monitored online, following which the winning team will be announced on May 9. Participants must display commitment to the competition’s objectives and maintain good communication with other members of their team. Collaboration to plan their tasks and distribution of roles is a key judging criteria. Also, each contestant is required to submit two ideas, which will be shortlisted based on relevance.
‘Friday Chef’ videoclip
In this activity, a participant will share a video recording of herself depicting how she applies what she learnt at one of the cooking programmes held previously by SGG. The videoclip must detail every step in preparing the recipe, and it will be posted on SGG’s social media platforms every Friday.
Mir Ramadan
Within the initiatives of the Sharjah Girl Guides during the holy month, SGG implemented the annual “Mir Ramadan” campaign under the slogan “Spread Happiness”, during which the basic materials were collected in the list of Ramadan charts from the contributions of the members, and then packed into boxes for distribution to needy families in cooperation with the Sharjah Charity International.
The initiative aimed to give the members the opportunity to work by donating materials to help the needy during the Covid 19 pandemic, and to raise awareness of the importance of volunteering and instilling compassion in the holy month of Ramadan.
