This resulted in the institute being crowned with a second category status affiliated with UNESCO, based on a number of pillars, which is an exceptional achievement.”
He continued, "Among those pillars are the programmes, events and activities launched by the Institute, with four main events that the Institute organizes annually, which are: Sharjah International Narrator Forum, Sharjah Traditional Crafts Forum, Sharjah Heritage Days, and Sharjah World Heritage Weeks Programme. Other popular activities include: The Night of the Half of Sha`ban, and the official events in which the Institute celebrates the major achievements of the UAE, such as the National Day of the United Arab Emirates, Flag Day, the Day of Tolerance, World Happiness Day, and other international days. The institute is proud to celebrate these occasions in accordance with the charters of the United Nations. "
Bounama continued: "The other pillar is the publication through which the institute seeks to publish encyclopaedic and lexical works, books, brochures, pamphlets and magazines, in order to provide the Emirati and Arab library with many valuable books and productions that constitute an important imprint and add a qualitative addition to this library."
Dr. Bounama stressed that the institute has achieved great success over the past years, as it has achieved more than 300 titles in various fields of cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible, in addition to anthropology, culture, literature, history, and other vital topics that were strongly present on the pages of the SIH publications. The extent and importance of these cultural projects fall in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, who has supported the Sharjah Institute for Heritage since its inception. This cultural session was intended to educate the public of Khorfakkan about the valuable achievements of SIH, headed by His Excellency Dr. Abdulaziz Al Musallam, Chairman of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage and Chairman of the Higher Committee of Sharjah Heritage Days.
Symposium on manuscript restoration and preservation
Among the activities of the Sharjah Heritage Days event in Khorfakkan, a lecture titled “Manuscript Restoration and Maintenance,” organized by the Academic Committee at the SHD was held. The Institute always strives to provide a number of graduates with opportunities in the field of manuscript restoration through the Professional Diplomas Programme.
Dr. Abdullah bin Hamouda Al Ketbi, Chairman of the Academic Committee for Sharjah Heritage Days, said: “The Institute always seeks to provide the cultural, educational and tourism field with frameworks equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective management and preservation of cultural heritage. The Institute aims to enhance awareness of restoration importance in order to encourage future generations to contribute to building knowledge about our history. "
For his part, Eng. Hassan Mamlouk, a member of the Academic Committee for Sharjah Heritage Days, said: “Who among us does not know the value of old books? And who among us has never looked for an old manuscript? The manuscript world has become a science in itself that has its origins, tools and methodology. This was discussed in this lecture, covering the basic components of the manuscript, the goal of manuscript restoration, the science of manuscript restoration, and the stages in which the manuscript passes, from the beginning of the restoration process to the end, and the benefit of every stage. "
Mamlouk indicated that the restoration work is accompanied by the manufacturing of preservation boxes to protect these manuscripts, as well as the manufacturing of restoration paper that must be made with the same materials from which the original manuscripts were made. He also discussed the topic of "digitisation", which is the process of converting manuscripts from a physical hard copy in to a digital electronic copy, to preserve the scientific content of these manuscripts from any possibility of loss or damage.
