Rybakina secured a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 victory, combining the Flushing Meadows title with her first career world No. 1 ranking. She had already secured Sabalenka’s removal from the top spot by reaching the semi-finals.
Rybakina made a strong start, taking the opening set 6-4. Sabalenka fought back in the second, breaking her opponent’s serve for the first time in the final game to win the set 7-5 and force a decider.
Rybakina quickly regained the upper hand in the third set, securing an early break and dominating the rest of the set to win 6-2 and close out the match with an ace.
The victory takes Rybakina’s Grand Slam tally to three titles, following her Wimbledon triumph in 2022 and her Australian Open victory earlier this year, when she also defeated Sabalenka in the final.
