Zverev dominated from the outset, taking the first two sets by identical 6-2 scores before facing greater resistance from his Italian opponent in the third.
The final set went to a tie-break, where the German sealed victory 7-6 (7-3) to complete a straight-sets win.
Zverev produced a more assured display than at the start of the tournament, having needed five sets in his matches against Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego and France’s Quentin Halys before defeating Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo in straight sets in the third round.
Speaking after the match, Zverev said his level was improving as the tournament progressed. He had spent long hours on court during the opening rounds as he continued his pursuit of a first Grand Slam title.
