Sharjah24: Operational statistics from the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) showed that approximately 25.7 million passengers used its transport services in the first half of 2026. This included 19.36 million taxi passengers, 3.21 million on public buses within Sharjah City, 3.16 million on intercity routes, and 36,600 using marine transport services, reflecting the diversity of transport options provided by the authority across the emirate.

This performance is part of SRTA’s strategy to build a smart and sustainable transport system that keeps pace with Sharjah’s urban and population growth and enhances quality of life by providing safe, reliable, and accessible mobility options. The authority continues to develop its services by modernising fleets, expanding digital solutions, improving operational efficiency, and supporting the transition to environmentally friendly transport, in line with the Sharjah Government’s sustainability and innovation goals and efforts to make public transport more attractive to all segments of society.

Engineer Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, Chairman of SRTA, said the achievements recorded in the first half of the year reflect the authority’s continued implementation of its vision to provide an integrated transport system that improves quality of life and strengthens community connectivity. He noted that developing transport services extends to delivering a smart, safe, and sustainable mobility experience that places people at the heart of development.

He said: “The development we are achieving across the transport system aligns with the objectives of the Year of the Family 2026, which places people at the heart of development. Every safer journey, easier service, and more efficient mobility option directly contributes to families’ comfort, stability, and quality of life. From this perspective, the authority continues to develop its services and projects to provide a smart and sustainable mobility system that meets present needs and keeps pace with future aspirations.”

Vital mobility

Al Othmani explained that the taxi franchise sector continued to perform strongly, with the fleet completing 12,907,577 trips and serving 19,361,365 passengers across 4,439 vehicles operated by 5,686 drivers. Airport taxi trips reached 403,429, highlighting the vital role of taxis in supporting daily mobility and connecting the emirate to key transport hubs.

He added that SRTA continues to enhance sustainability in the taxi sector by expanding its environmentally friendly fleet, which currently comprises 3,366 eco-friendly vehicles, in line with its efforts to reduce carbon emissions through greener mobility solutions and its long-term transition towards sustainable transport.

Enhanced bus services

Al Othmani said that bus transport services also recorded notable growth during the same period. Public buses within Sharjah City carried 3,214,322 passengers across 13 routes serving 527 stops, using a fleet of 110 buses, with a daily average of 17,772 passengers.

The authority’s Bus on Demand service, covering University City, Al Juraina, Al Noaf, Muwaileh Commercial, and Aljada, served 2,851 passengers, while 9,002 passengers used the Sayer smart card, indicating the growing adoption of digital transport services.

Sustainable transport

SRTA continued to develop its intercity transport services, operating 167 buses on 16 routes connecting Sharjah with several cities across the UAE. Intercity services carried 3,161,951 passengers in the first half of the year, averaging 17,487 passengers per day.

The Sharjah–Abu Dhabi Route 117 recorded the highest ridership across all routes, underscoring its importance in connecting the two emirates and meeting growing demand for intercity travel.

Al Othmani stressed that expanding sustainable transport remains one of the authority’s key priorities. The number of electric buses increased to 20, carrying 356,942 passengers during the first six months of the year, with a daily average of 1,983 passengers. The expansion supports the adoption of low-emission transport and contributes to Sharjah’s environmental sustainability goals.

Operational continuity

Abdulaziz Al Jarwan, Director of Transport Affairs at SRTA, said marine transport services continued to operate efficiently, offering an additional mobility option within the emirate. The marine abra carried 36,631 passengers on 1,378 trips during the first six months of the year, with the number of trips adjusted to seasonal demand to ensure operational efficiency and optimal use of resources.

He added that the authority continuously monitors marine transport performance indicators to further develop the service, enhance readiness, and strengthen its role within Sharjah’s integrated transport system.

Smart systems

Al Jarwan noted that SRTA continued to invest in digital transformation and to develop its service channels, with smart transport systems recording 875,981 uses in the first half of the year.

The Yango app accounted for 452,637 trips, representing 51.67% of total usage, while Uber recorded 375,192 trips, representing 42.83%.

He said these figures reflect growing customer confidence in the authority’s digital services and the success of its efforts to simplify access to transport services and to expand smart channels, in line with Sharjah’s digital transformation.

Training and development

Regarding human capital development, Al Jarwan said that SRTA delivered two foundational training courses for taxi drivers in the first half of the year, benefiting 229 drivers. The specialised programmes focused on improving driver efficiency, enhancing service quality, and elevating the customer experience.

He stressed that the authority places significant emphasis on training and professional development as fundamental pillars of an advanced transport system, preparing qualified personnel to deliver professional services in line with best practice and enhancing safety, service quality, and customer satisfaction.
