According to Italy's Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the tremor hit the Campi Flegrei—home to Europe's largest volcanic crater—at a shallow depth of three kilometres. Lorenzo Benedetto, president of the Order of Geologists of Campania, noted that the tremor stands as "the strongest earthquake to have occurred in the Phlegraean Fields in the past 40 years."
The primary shock was followed by a restless night of lower-intensity aftershocks. Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci reported on social media that the disaster triggered landslides and caused "the collapse of several unoccupied buildings."
Out of the 26 individuals injured, five required hospitalization. Civil protection agencies confirmed that approximately 300 people were forced to evacuate, with the bulk of the structural damage and all evacuees concentrated in the nearby town of Pozzuoli.
In the wake of the disaster, Minister Musumeci warned that local volcanic activity remains ongoing, urging residents to exercise extreme caution.
