Sharjah 24: The Swiss national team qualified for the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1954, beating Colombia on penalties 4-3 after a 0-0 draw in Vancouver.

Switzerland reached the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1954, beating Colombia on penalties 4-3 after their 0-0 draw in Vancouver.

Meeting Argentina in the quarter-finals

In the last match held in the current edition in Canada and the last match in the round of 16, the two teams failed to score in regular and extra time, then Colombia missed two penalty kicks and a kick for Switzerland, which will meet defending champion Argentina in the quarter-finals on Saturday in Kansas.

Colombia, which reached the quarter-finals once in 2014, was eliminated from the same round in the 2018 edition in a similar manner via penalty kicks against England.

Colombia exited the tournament after conceding only one goal throughout the tournament, but it did not benefit from the attacking power led by Luis Dias, along with James Rodriguez, winner of the Golden Boot award in the 2014 World Cup.

Quarter-finals for the first time since 1954

On the other hand, Switzerland reached the quarter-finals for the first time since hosting the tournament in 1954, after it produced a remarkable performance in its 2-0 victory over Algeria in the round of 32.

Before that, it tied with Qatar 1-1, beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1 and Canada 2-1.

The two teams met once previously in the World Cup, which ended with Colombia winning 2-0 in the group stage of the 1994 edition.
