Sharjah 24: France secured their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over a resilient Paraguay side that prevented Les Bleus from producing the free-flowing attacking football that had seen them score 13 goals in their previous four matches.

The decisive goal came from Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé, who converted a penalty to take his tournament tally to seven goals. He now shares the lead in the Golden Boot race with Argentina captain Lionel Messi and has narrowed the gap to the Argentine in the all-time World Cup scoring charts, with 19 goals to Messi’s 20.

Earlier on Saturday, Morocco continued its impressive run in the tournament with a convincing 3-0 victory over Canada, one of the three host nations, in Houston.

Speaking after the match, which saw three French players booked in a tense encounter, Mbappé said: “We knew the kind of match that awaited us, but I think things went very well today.”
