Martinez, whose contract expires in July, told a press conference: “This was my last match with Portugal.”
He added: “First, I want to thank the Portuguese people. It has been an incredible period and an honour I cannot describe. The energy and support from the fans have been amazing, and I will cherish these memories for the rest of my life.
“Second, I want to thank the players for their work. We have talented players, but more importantly, they were committed to building a team. That starts with attitude and dedication, and we had both.”
Martinez took over Portugal in January 2023 and oversaw 45 matches, recording 32 wins, six draws and seven defeats. He also guided the national team to the 2025 UEFA Nations League title.
He said: “We played 45 matches and achieved the best figures in Portugal’s history in terms of goals scored and points won, thanks to the players’ commitment. Winning the Nations League and setting new records are among the highlights, so they deserve enormous credit.”
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo declined to make a final decision on his international future, telling reporters: “I will have time to think about what comes next (...) and not make any hasty decisions.”
Martinez praised his striker, who started every match at the World Cup in North America and was substituted only once, saying: “He was an ideal captain. Since I arrived, he has been a model of commitment, not only through his goals but also in the way he lives for football.”
