Sharjah 24: Norway pulled off a major upset, defeating Brazil 2-1 in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup in New Jersey.

Norway stunned the world when striker Erling Haaland scored two late goals to eliminate five-time champions Brazil (2-1) from the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup in New Jersey.

Brazil missed a penalty through Bruno Guimarães in the first quarter of an hour, while Haaland struck decisively (79th and 90th minutes), bringing his tally to seven goals, level with France's Kylian Mbappé and Argentina's Lionel Messi. Norway will now face England, who defeated Mexico.

Haaland eliminates Brazil

Erling Haaland, the Manchester City striker, didn't touch the ball much in the match, but the 25-year-old still managed to increase his international tally to 62 goals in 54 appearances and 27 goals in his last 14 competitive matches for Norway.

"It's just a crazy day," Haaland said. "It's one of the craziest days in Norway's history."

He continued, "That's how it usually goes. If you get one or two chances, they usually turn into a goal. I don't know how I do it, but that's my way, so it's all about staying focused. I tell myself the chance will come, and I often know right away if I'm not going to score."

Seconds after coming on as a substitute, Leo Østgaard fouled Casemiro in the penalty area, and the referee awarded a penalty kick. Neymar converted the spot kick more than two minutes after the end of stoppage time (90+10), securing Norway's qualification and postponing Brazil's bid for their sixth title and first since 2002.
