Sharjah24: The Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) has won the Emirates Ideas Award in the Environment and Green Applications category for its innovative Palm Oasis lighting project.

Implemented by SEWA’s Electricity Distribution Department, the project features the installation of 251 lighting poles, each standing 8 metres tall and inspired by the shape of palm trees. Equipped with advanced lighting technologies, the poles add an aesthetic touch to the oasis while incorporating modern technologies into the project.

The project reflects the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, which focuses on achieving sustainable development, protecting the environment and strengthening the emirate’s cultural identity.

This is being achieved through the adoption of innovative projects that combine modernity with authenticity while supporting the use of smart and environmentally friendly solutions.

SEWA received the award shield during the annual ceremony organised by Dubai Quality Group to honour winners from the UAE and Gulf countries representing government and private sector institutions.

The event was held under the patronage and in the presence of Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Group, as well as Dr Hazza Khalfan Al Nuaimi, Chairman of Dubai Quality Group.

Dr Eng Hassan Al Zarooni, Director of the Electricity Distribution Department at SEWA, explained that the project is based on developing an innovative model for lighting poles inspired by palm trees, combining technical efficiency with aesthetic and cultural value.

The poles were designed to resemble palm fronds and incorporate energy-efficient lighting technologies along with a smart control system that enables flexible operation. This contributes to sustainability, reduces operational costs and enhances the visual identity of Sharjah.

Engineer Shamma Al Ramsi from the Electricity Distribution Department said the project’s design represents an integrated model reflecting the UAE’s environmental and cultural identity.

The poles were developed as artistic and engineering elements that capture the beauty of nature, with decorative details inspired by Islamic motifs to strengthen their visual appeal.

She confirmed that the project has proven successful in Palm Oasis, where it has improved lighting quality and provided a safe and comfortable environment for visitors.

The initiative has also enhanced the site’s attractiveness and increased visitor numbers. Furthermore, it represents an important step towards adopting innovative lighting solutions in future smart city projects, with potential for expansion to other locations and developments across the Emirate of Sharjah.
