The games will continue at ADNEC Abu Dhabi and the Khalifa International Bowling Centre until June 10.
The event serves as an integrated sporting and community platform, reflecting the continued growth of the UAE Special Olympics movement and reinforcing the role of sport in promoting inclusion, empowerment and positive social impact.
The opening ceremony was attended by Dr Sultan bin Saif Al Neyadi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa bin Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan, Ayman Abdel Wahab and Talal Al Hashemi, together with officials from the participating clubs and teams.
The current edition features artistic and rhythmic gymnastics for the first time, reflecting the ongoing expansion of the competition programme.
Athletes will compete in basketball, women’s 3x3 basketball, seven-a-side football, badminton, powerlifting, bocce, bowling and the Motor Activity Training Programme (MATP).
Ayman Abdel Wahab said the games continue to build on the legacy of the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019, which marked a major milestone for the Special Olympics movement, both regionally and globally.
Talal Al Hashemi described the event as a practical demonstration of inclusion, highlighting the contributions of partners, sponsors and supporters in creating opportunities for People of Determination.
In addition to sporting competitions, the event features the internationally accredited Healthy Athletes programme, which offers free health screenings and awareness services covering oral health, vision care and health education.
The games also feature supporting initiatives, including the Young Athletes Programme, esports and future games activities, and the Fit 5 fitness programme.
