Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David headline Canada’s squad for the FIFA World Cup after American coach Jesse Marsch announced his 26-man roster for the tournament.
Davies, the Bayern Munich defender, was deemed fit enough to be included despite recovering from a hamstring injury. Meanwhile, Juventus striker Jonathan David will spearhead the attack for a Canadian side that has never won a World Cup match but has made significant progress in the FIFA rankings in recent years.
The squad also features several prominent players, including Porto playmaker Stephen Eustáquio, Sassuolo midfielder Ismaël Koné, Villarreal duo Tajon Buchanan and Tani Oluwaseyi, and Southampton striker Cyle Larin.
Several players carrying injury concerns were also included in the squad, namely Nice defender Moïse Bombito, Norwich City midfielder Ali Ahmed, Los Angeles FC winger Jacob Shaffelburg, and Union Saint-Gilloise striker Promise David.
Canada will begin its Group B campaign against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto on June 12 before travelling to Vancouver to face Qatar and Switzerland.
Canada's goalkeeping unit consists of Dayne St. Clair of Inter Miami (United States), Maxime Crépeau of Orlando City (United States), and Owen Goodman of Crystal Palace (England).
The defensive line includes Alistair Johnston of Celtic (Scotland), Derek Cornelius of Marseille (France), Richie Laryea of Toronto FC (Canada), Niko Sigur of Hajduk Split (Croatia), Joel Waterman of Chicago Fire (United States), Luc de Fougerolles of Fulham (England), Moïse Bombito of Nice (France), Alphonso Davies of Bayern Munich (Germany), and Alfie Jones of Middlesbrough (England).
