Sharjah 24: The Arabic Language Education Centre for the Gulf States (ALECGS), an affiliate of the Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States (ABEGS), participated in the 44th Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF 2025) with a session titled: " Arabic Language Education Centre for the Gulf States’ Efforts in Developing Reading Comprehension Skills at the General Education Stages."
The session was presented by His Excellency Dr Issa Saleh Al Hammadi, Director of ALECGS in Sharjah, and moderated by journalist Yousef Al Hammadi, in the Al Multaqa Hall 2.
The seminar addressed two main themes: the first being the Centre's efforts in the field of reading, and the second being a study titled: "Developing Reading Comprehension Skills at the General Education Stages."
The Centre's efforts in the field of reading
Dr Issa Saleh Al Hammadi began by addressing the first topic: the Educational Centre's efforts in the field of reading. He highlighted some of the most important studies and research in this area, including: reading materials suitable for students in grades one through six and then through twelve; a study on the effectiveness of a programme based on phonological awareness activities in developing basic reading skills among students in the first three grades; a study on developing e-reading skills for secondary school students; a study on difficulties in teaching reading and writing in the early grades (signs, causes, and solutions); teaching reading to beginners in light of oral language requirements; and a study on a picture-reading programme to develop creative language production skills among secondary school students based on standard levels, in addition to many other studies conducted by the Centre.

Developing reading comprehension skills in general education stages
The second axis, a study entitled "Developing Reading Comprehension Skills in General Education Stages," reviewed the most important publications of the Arabic Language Educational Center in the field of reading. This study, also entitled "Developing Reading Comprehension Skills in General Education Stages," aims to develop reading comprehension skills (words, sentences, paragraphs, and texts) and levels of reading comprehension (inferential, appreciative, critical, creative, etc.). It also explores strategies for developing reading comprehension skills (such as text structure and modeling strategies, literature circles, and semantic fields).
Al Hammadi also outlined the study's procedures and tools, which included a questionnaire assessing reading comprehension skills in general education stages, reading comprehension tests, reading comprehension test scoring templates, a proposed program for developing reading comprehension skills in general education stages, and finally, the study's recommendations and suggestions.

At the end of the session, Al Hammadi stressed the importance of this study in the field of developing reading comprehension skills, given that it meets the needs of educational institutions in preparing and qualifying students for reading in general and for international tests such as the international PIRLS test and others in equipping students with the necessary skills in the field of reading comprehension. He also stressed the need to benefit from the proposed programme in developing reading comprehension skills as an outcome of the study.
