Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti kept his hopes of qualifying for the ATP Finals alive by beating France’s Alexander Muller 6-2, 6-4, joining top seed Novak Djokovic, ranked fifth in the world, in the semifinals of the Athens Open.
Djokovic secured his semifinal spot with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 victory over Borges in the quarterfinals.
Musetti, ranked ninth globally, must win the Athens title to overtake Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime and secure a place at the ATP Finals in Turin next week.
A tough qualifying group
Regardless of who qualifies, Musetti will enter a challenging group with world number one Jannik Sinner of Italy, Alexander Zverev of Germany, and Ben Shelton of the United States.
He will face American Sebastian Korda in the semifinals on Friday.
200th indoor win
Djokovic notched his 200th indoor victory after a one-hour-and-44-minute match, setting up a semifinal against German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann.
The 38-year-old Serb is competing in Athens despite already having secured his ATP Finals berth, where he will compete against Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, Taylor Fritz of the United States, and Alex de Minaur of Australia.
