Moza's story is just one of hundreds created by SCHS over more than four decades, making it a model for empowering people with disabilities through education, rehabilitation, and employment. Today, Sharjah is preparing to highlight these inspiring experiences by organising the World Congress 2025 "We Are Inclusion" from September 15 to 17, in partnership with Inclusion International and a logistical partnership with the Sharjah Government Media Bureau (SGMB). The conference will bring together leading institutions and experts to discuss issues of inclusion and empowerment.
Since its founding in 1979, SCHS has led an unprecedented journey in the region to serve and empower people with disabilities. In 1995, it was transformed into an independent civil society organisation by royal decree, expanding its scope through 13 specialised centres and three branches in Khorfakkan, Al Dhaid, and Kalba. During this journey, it has developed pioneering programmes that include early intervention, inclusive education, vocational rehabilitation, and support for innovation in assistive technologies.
The city has achieved significant accomplishments throughout its journey, including twice receiving the global CARF accreditation for quality, launching a self-advocacy unit that empowers people with disabilities to express their issues and defend their rights, and establishing student and family councils. It has also distinguished itself with its pioneering programmes in employing people with disabilities in inclusive work environments.
In the field of innovation, SCHS launched the Supportive Application Design Competition, which encouraged the development of digital technology solutions that enhance the independence of people with disabilities. In terms of community awareness, Al Manal, the city's e-magazine, has played a pivotal role in spreading knowledge and changing societal perceptions of disability.
SCHS has not limited itself to its local role, but has also promoted disability issues to international fora through conferences, workshops, and expertise-sharing initiatives, making Sharjah a key hub in formulating policies and developing legislation that support the rights of people with disabilities. Through its slogan, "Nothing About Them Without Them," the city has promoted the participation of people with disabilities in planning and decision-making, both in its programmes and in broader societal issues.
SCHS aspires to build a world that embraces all its people through education, rehabilitation, and employment. It expands its services within the emirate and beyond, adopts the latest global technologies in training and education, and strengthens its partnerships with the public and private sectors, as well as with local and international decision-makers.
The city also continues its role in empowering young people with disabilities to become leaders and innovators of the future by developing their leadership and creative skills and paving new paths for their active participation in various areas of life.
With the World Congress 2025 "We Are Inclusion" approaching, the city represents a living demonstration of the potential of supportive policies, effective partnerships, and a clear vision to transform the lives of individuals and communities. Every success story that emerges from its members, like Moza Abdullah's, reflects a broader message: that inclusion is the foundation for building a cohesive society that recognises its diversity and celebrates all its members.
