Marking its silver jubilee, the six-day event will be held under the theme “Tales of Travelers”, introducing new features to this year’s programme, as announced at a press conference held at the Sharjah Institute for Heritage (SIH).
His Excellency Dr Abdul Aziz Al Musallam, Chairman of the SIH and the Supreme Organising Committee of SINF, highlighted the event’s evolution. What began as “Narrator Day” 25 years ago to honor Emirati storyteller Rashid Al Shooq has now grown into a global platform celebrating oral heritage and storytelling traditions.
This year’s edition will honor H.E. Mohammed Al Murr as the honorary personality, and Dr Claudia from Italy, for their cultural contributions. Additional recognition will go to Dr Ali Al Shaloubi (UAE) and Amina Kosto (Morocco) for their work in preserving Arab heritage.
Aisha Al Hussan Al Shamsi, Director of the Arab Heritage Centre and General Coordinator at SINF, described the forum as a gateway to global heritage. The event features 10 academic sessions with 45 experts from 15 countries exploring travel literature, storytelling, and the cultural significance of journeys.
Two special exhibitions will be featured: “Tales of Travelers”, showcasing historical journeys and their legacies; an exhibit from His Excellency Mohammed Al Murr’s personal collection, reflecting his literary and intellectual journey; and live sessions with contemporary travelers will also be held, where they’ll share their experiences with the public.
The forum will welcome delegations from over 35 countries, including the UAE, GCC states, multiple Arab nations, and countries from Europe, Asia, and Africa. This underlines the forum’s global status in the field of intangible cultural heritage.
Leading academic and cultural institutions such as the University of Sharjah, Zhejiang University of Science and Technology (China), Egypt’s Higher Institute of Folk Arts, and the Qatar National Library will participate. Local partners include the Environment and Protected Areas Authority, Sharjah Museums Authority, Sharjah Libraries, and more.
The 25th edition will launch 40 new publications focused on Arab travel literature, including titles like “Travel Literature in the Arab World” and the “Eye of Journeys” series. The forum also features 25 specialised workshops and a dedicated book-signing corner.
