Sharjah 24 – AFP: The Civil Defence in the Gaza Strip announced on Monday that 20 people, including five journalists and one civil defence member, were killed following two Israeli airstrikes targeting Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza.

Fifth journalist dies from injuries

Initially, officials reported the deaths of four journalists in the airstrike. Later, a fifth journalist was confirmed dead after succumbing to injuries sustained in the same attack, according to the hospital and civil defence sources.

Civil defence confirms toll

Spokesman Mahmoud Basal stated: “The death toll so far is 20, including five journalists and a member of the Civil Defence,” adding that the hospital building was targeted twice by Israeli forces.

Israeli army responds

In a statement, the Israeli military acknowledged the strike and announced that it would conduct a preliminary investigation “as soon as possible.” The army expressed “regret for any harm caused to uninvolved individuals” and emphasized that it “does not target journalists.”

Journalists among most affected by conflict

Rights groups have reported that around 200 journalists and media workers have been killed in the 22 months since the war between Israel and Hamas erupted, making it one of the deadliest conflicts for the press in recent history.
