Sharjah 24 – AFP: Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp resigned on Friday after a cabinet meeting failed to reach an agreement on imposing new sanctions against Israel over its actions in Gaza. His departure has added to the political turmoil in the Netherlands, with several ministers from the New Social Contract party also exiting the government.

Unable to implement desired policy

Veldkamp, a former ambassador to Israel, expressed frustration with the internal resistance he faced. He stated that he felt “insufficiently able to take meaningful additional measures,” making it impossible to carry out the policies he deemed necessary.

Failed attempts to pressure Israel

Earlier, Veldkamp had aimed to increase pressure on Israel, proposing measures such as import bans and declarations against settlement activities. Despite “serious discussions,” his proposals were blocked in cabinet.

Political fallout and caretaker government at risk

The resignation deepens the political crisis in the already fragile caretaker government. The NSC party’s withdrawal leaves key ministries without leadership and highlights the challenge of maintaining governance ahead of upcoming elections.
