Sharjah 24 – WAM: The UAE Cyber Security Council (CSC) has reported that more than 12,000 cyber breaches have occurred since the start of the year due to the use of open and untrusted public Wi-Fi networks. These incidents represent nearly 35% of all cyberattacks recorded in the UAE so far in 2025, highlighting a growing trend in which hackers are exploiting unsecured connections to access personal and financial data.

CSC urges caution with public networks

The Council has warned users about the dangers of connecting to public Wi-Fi, stressing that these networks can serve as traps for data theft. It urged individuals to avoid conducting sensitive transactions on such networks and to adopt safe digital practices. These include enabling multi-factor authentication, using trusted security tools, and steering clear of suspicious websites or activities while connected to unsecured networks.

Public Wi-Fi a gateway for data theft

According to the CSC, public Wi-Fi networks in locations like cafes, airports, and shopping malls are often not adequately secured. Despite their convenience and accessibility, they pose a significant threat to users who may unknowingly expose their data to cybercriminals. Many users remain unaware that these networks can lead to password theft, financial fraud, and even the installation of malicious software on their devices.

Recommended safety measures

To minimise the risks, the Council advises users to connect to the internet on public networks only with proper safeguards. This includes using a reliable virtual private network (VPN) to encrypt their connection, activating the "Safe Browsing" feature in web browsers to block harmful websites, and refraining from logging into sensitive accounts such as online banking or personal email when using open networks.

Threats go beyond data theft

The CSC outlined that the dangers associated with public Wi-Fi extend beyond just the interception of data. Hackers can redirect users to fake websites, record phone calls, and even gain remote access to mobile devices. In some cases, attackers have installed spyware and other forms of malware without the user's knowledge, turning unsecured connections into gateways for large-scale cyber intrusion.

Building a secure digital environment

Dr Mohammed Al Kuwaiti, Head of Cyber Security for the UAE Government, reaffirmed the country's ongoing commitment to building a safe and resilient digital ecosystem. Under the directives of the UAE’s leadership, the Council continues to implement national strategies that strengthen public trust in the country’s digital infrastructure and promote a culture of cybersecurity awareness.

Awareness through "Cyber Pulse" campaign

In support of these efforts, the Cyber Security Council has launched the second edition of the "Cyber Pulse" campaign across social media. The initiative aims to raise awareness among individuals and institutions about cyber risks and promote responsible online behavior. It reflects the UAE’s broader vision to create a secure cyberspace that evolves with rapid technological advancements.

First line of defence: Awareness

The Council concluded that awareness remains the first and most effective line of defense against cybercrime. While technical tools and protections are essential, the ability of users to recognise and respond to threats is equally critical. By taking proactive steps and staying informed, individuals can significantly reduce their vulnerability in an increasingly connected digital world.
