The swarm of tremors, reaching magnitudes of up to 5.6, rattled the country on Tuesday afternoon. The epicenter was reported near the towns of Amatitlán and Alotenango, located southwest of the capital, as per seismological services.
"Unfortunately, human fatalities are confirmed," stated Andres Erazo, a spokesman for the disaster coordination agency Conred. The landslide occurred on a highway, where rocks and earth buried the vehicle.
President Bernardo Arevalo informed reporters that the earthquakes had also trapped a family of five, who were in the process of being rescued. Additionally, two other individuals required treatment for injuries sustained before being freed.
The tremors prompted dozens of residents to evacuate buildings in Guatemala City, where anti-earthquake alarms sounded.
Central America is known for its seismic activity, frequently experiencing tremors due to the shifting of the Caribbean and Cocos tectonic plates.
