According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake's epicentre was located offshore, about 48 kilometres from Aquiles Serdan, at a depth of 18 kilometres.
Mexico's seismological service recorded more than 30 aftershocks, including one of magnitude 6.8.
The United States initially issued a tsunami warning for the Pacific coastal areas of Mexico and Guatemala, later announcing that the threat had passed.
Strong tremors were felt across the Mexican states of Chiapas and Oaxaca, as well as in Guatemala and El Salvador, prompting precautionary evacuations from buildings.
Authorities reported no casualties or significant damage.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she had spoken with governors of the affected states, while Navy Secretary Raymundo Morales said there had been no serious effects.
The region is among the world's most earthquake-prone because it lies along the boundaries of several active tectonic plates.
