Guterres urges India, Pakistan to de-escalate Kashmir tensions

Sharjah 24 – AFP: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres contacted Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on Tuesday, urging both sides to de-escalate rising tensions following a deadly attack last week in Indian-administered Kashmir.

Concern over potential confrontation

In a statement, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Guterres “expressed his deep concern at rising tensions between India and Pakistan and underscored the need to avoid a confrontation that could result in tragic consequences.”

Offer of mediation

Guterres also offered his Good Offices to support any efforts aimed at reducing tensions and promoting dialogue between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
