UOS, EIPA Sign MoU promoting knowledge, research, and innovation

Sharjah 24: The University of Sharjah has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Emirates Intellectual Property Association (EIPA) to strengthen cooperation in raising public awareness of the importance of intellectual property rights, exchanging expertise, and developing capabilities. This agreement forms part of joint efforts to support innovation and scientific research while bolstering the UAE’s position as a leading hub for intellectual property protection. The MoU was signed by Professor Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, and Ms. Fatima Alhosani, Vice Chair of EIPA’s Board of Directors, in the presence of UoS Vice Chancellors, directors of research institutes, and members of the association’s board.

The agreement seeks to facilitate collaboration in various fields, with a particular focus on holding educational events and conferences to enhance public awareness of intellectual property rights. It also aims to support joint scientific research dedicated to developing intellectual property policies and legislation. Furthermore, both parties will coordinate efforts to offer training programs, workshops, and seminars aimed at honing the skills of national talent and promoting better understanding of global best practices in the field. The MoU also envisions the establishment of a comprehensive educational framework through initiatives that focus on intellectual property protection, and efforts to enhance legal awareness by exchanging periodicals, newsletters, and specialized scientific publications.

During his speech, Professor Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy underscored the significance of this partnership, emphasizing that the MoU aligns with the University’s vision to advance scientific research and innovation while fostering an educational environment that encourages the talented to protect and commercialize their innovations. He highlighted that the agreement would contribute to the development of programs aimed at protecting the rights of inventors and innovators and strengthening the role of academic institutions in the practice of intellectual property protection. He also noted that the University’s mission extends beyond education as it places a strong emphasis on scientific research and boasts specialized research centers that develop innovative solutions across various fields. He expressed his pride in this collaboration, which he believes will lead to further achievements that benefit the local community. 

In turn, Major General Dr. Abdul Quddous Abdul Razzaq Al Obaidli, Chairman of the EIPA Board of Directors, praised the existing cooperation with the University of Sharjah. He affirmed that the agreement is intended to enhance awareness of intellectual property rights and their vital role in advancing innovation and supporting the national economy. He also stressed the need to develop national legislation to combat intellectual property-related crimes and highlighted the importance of international collaboration and information exchange to address challenges in this field more effectively. Additionally, he noted that EIPA is committed to training specialists in the field of intellectual property protection. 

Dr. Mohammed Al Hemairy, Head of the Technology Transfer Office at the University, announced that under the terms of this agreement, the University of Sharjah will host the fourth edition of the Arab Intellectual Property Conference in cooperation with EIPA and the Arab Administrative Development Organization (ARADO), an entity affiliated with the League of Arab States. Scheduled for April, the conference will focus on encouraging inventors to transform innovations and inventions they developed at university into viable products and services while ensuring the protection of intellectual property rights.
