Sharjah 24: The Sharjah Sports Council successfully organised the second edition of the Al Madam Desert Games Tournament on February 1-2, at Al Badayer Oasis in the Al Madam area. The event saw the participation of 1062 athletes of both genders, competing in football, basketball, volleyball, running, and archery. Athletes from clubs in Al Madam, Al Dhaid, Bataeh, Kalba, and Mleiha, alongside desert sports enthusiasts, contributed to the diverse competition.

Key figures and event organisation

The event was supported by a number of contributing entities, with the winners crowned in a ceremony attended by Sheikh Mohammed Muadhd bin Huwaiden Al Ketbi; His Excellency Sultan Mohammed Muadhd bin Huwaiden Al Ketbi; His Excellency Salem Mohammed Al Rashidi; His Excellency Rashid Abdullah bin Huwaiden Al Ketbi, and other prominent members of the Sharjah Consultative Council, along with Dr Yasser Omar Al- Doukhi and leaders from the participating clubs.

Competition results

  • Football: Al Bataeh (B) crowned champions, with Al Madam in second and Al Bataeh (A) in third.
  • Volleyball: Al Dhaid took first place, Kalba was second, and Al Madam was third.
  • Basketball: Al Madam won, Kalba was runner-up, and Mleiha placed third.

Archery:

    • Under 15: Ali Yaqoub (Sharjah Club) placed first, followed by Mohammed Saeed and Mansour Saeed (Al Madam).
    • Under 12: Hamdan Mohammed (Al Madam) was first, with Ali Mohammed (Mleiha) second and Musabah Hamad (Al Madam) third.
  • 5 km Run for Citizens: Saud Al Zaabi placed first, followed by Khalifa Al Nuaimi and Saeed Mohammed.
    • Open Category: Halifoum Idano, Yasser Shashwi, and Sameer Zuhair took the top three positions.
  • 1 km Run for Citizens: Suhail Al Zarouni was first, Obaid Al Ketbi second, and Faisal Al Ketbi third.
  • Female Citizens Category: Alyazia Faisal claimed first, Salama Ahmed second, and Latifa Al Shamsi third.
  • Open Category for Girls: Alyssa finished first, followed by Ebni Fernandez and Sarah Qamar.

Closing remarks

Dr Yasser Omar Al-Doukhi expressed his satisfaction with the success of the tournament’s second edition. He praised the enthusiasm and wide participation across various age groups, noting that desert sports have firmly established themselves on the Sharjah Sports Council’s annual events calendar. Dr Al-Doukhi also acknowledged the contributions of Al Madam Club and all supporting entities, emphasising their role in making the event a success.
