The Arab Poetry Forum was organised by the Department of Cultural Affairs at Sharjah Department of Culture (SDC), in coordination with the Cooperation Association for Social Development based in Porto Novo. 6 poets participated in the forum that included a seminar entitled "The Arabic Language Movement in Beninese Society".
The forum was held in the halls of "Mafela, Akpaka", in the city of Cotonou, in the presence of His Excellency Mohammed Saeed Al Kaabi, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to the Republic of Benin; His Excellency Raja Al Wakil, Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Benin; Ibrahim Ogbon, General Coordinator of the Forum, President of the Cooperation Association for Social Development; Abdel Ghaffar Ghanoura, Representative of the Islamic Union in Benin; heads of Arab diplomatic missions; in addition to university and institute professors, students, enthusiasts of Arabic poetry.
The forum started with a speech by Ibrahim Ogbon, stressing that Sharjah is a fundamental pillar in supporting the Arabic language and its advancement in West African countries through a generous initiative established by His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, represented by the Arabic Poetry Fora in Africa.
Ogbon stressed that the forum is a great opportunity to promote the Arabic language and pay attention to poets speaking Arabic. Ogbon added that the opportunity is granted to a number of countries in the region by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.
