Department of Culture publishes issue 82 of Theatre Magazine

Sharjah 24: The latest issue (82) of "The Theatre" magazine, published monthly by the Sharjah Department of Culture, includes a diverse collection of critical reviews, interviews, and reports that highlight the most prominent features of the theatre movement in Sharjah and internationally.

An array of topics

In the "Introduction" section, the magazine dedicated significant space to covering the graduation ceremony of the fourth cohort from the University of Sharjah's Academy of Performing Arts, which was attended by His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. The section also featured a survey of the "Elements of Theatrical Performance" workshop, which precedes the Kalba Short Plays Festival. The thirteenth edition of the festival will launch at the beginning of July. The survey included testimonials from several local artists about the workshop's impact on honing talent and enriching the theatre scene with new experiences.

In the "Reviews" section, we find a number of reviews of the most prominent theatrical productions recently presented. In the "Visions" section, Rashid Mustafa Bakheet writes about the play "Choosing a Title" by Emirati director Ibrahim Salem, while Yasmine Farag reviews "Friday," the latest work by Egyptian director Ahmed El-Bohy. Kamal Chehaoui analyzes "Alone" by Tunisian director Walid Daghssani.

In the "Visions" section, Jamal Al-Munir discusses actor performance and audience interaction, while Riyad Moussa Sakran writes about the aesthetic premises in the works of Emirati director Mohammed Al-Amiri.

In the "Dialogue" section, the magazine features an interview conducted by Rabah Hawadif with Algerian artist Ahmed Razak, in which he discusses his beginnings, the most prominent milestones in his career, and his vision of a commercially successful theatrical work.

In the "Journeys" section, Syrian director Samer Mohammed Ismail documents his trip to the Tunisian city of Hammamet to present his play "Performance Experience," showcasing the festival atmosphere and the unique character of the venue.

The "Horizons" section highlights the experience of Tunisian director Marwa Al-Manaei, who discusses her ongoing attempts to challenge established artistic conventions and create new paths in the architecture of theatrical space.

In the “Reviews” section, we find a review by Youssef Amfaza of the book “Seneca’s Monsters: Towards a Dramaturgy of Roman Tragedy” by the French researcher Florence Dupont.

Most important events

In the “Follow-ups” section, Sabri Hafez highlights the most prominent features of the 80th Avignon Festival, which will be held from July 4-24. This section also includes a report on the preparations for the 17th Arab Theatre Festival, which Jordan will host next January, as well as an interview with Emirati director Habib Ghuloom about his play “Forgotten Moments,” which premiered in 1989 at the Cairo International Festival for Experimental Theatre.

The issue concludes with the “Letters” section, which provides extensive coverage of the ninth edition of the Dibba Al-Hisn Festival of Two-Person Theatre, in addition to coverage of the most important events accompanying the Swedish Biennial of Performing Arts, the celebration of Moroccan National Theatre Day, and other letters from Arab and Western capitals.
