Sharjah24: As part of the 11th edition of the Sharjah Calligraphy Forum themed 'Numerals,' organized by the Cultural Affairs Department at the Department of Culture , calligrapher Reda Juma presented an artistic workshop at Al Huda Mosque in Khalidiya on Monday, entitled 'Interlocking Composition without Numerals in Jali Script.'

Several students attended the workshop, learning how to create intricate calligraphic designs that blend words and phrases in an interlocking style without using punctuation marks.

Juma emphasized at the beginning of the workshop that Jali script is considered one of the easy yet challenging scripts. The composition in Jali script is also deemed 'elegantly challenging' due to the simplicity of letters, absence of dots, and extended connections. This challenge can be overcome by selecting short and combinable texts through attempts and choosing the best options.

Juma continued by explaining that the aesthetics of the composition can be highlighted by distributing repeated alif characters, similar cups, resulting in a magnificent artistic formation no less beautiful than Thuluth and Naskh calligraphy compositions. He selected the noble Quranic verse: 'Indeed, this Quran guides to that which is most suitable' as a study model.

Juma then explained the artistic principles of Jali script, its distinctive features compared to other scripts, and how to develop it to suit artistic composition. He highlighted the correct fundamentals of writing letters and words in this script, focusing on the methods that can be used to merge letters in a beautiful way. He presented examples of works that used this style, analyzed them to extract the rules and techniques used in Jali script.

For the students, Juma clarified how to design and arrange texts in an interlocking manner without losing the clarity of words, ensuring that the design remains interconnected and aesthetically pleasing. Finally, he dedicated a portion of the workshop to practical training in writing 'interlocking compositions,' utilizing short texts (verses, poems, aphorisms) to create unique designs
