Sharjah24: The Sharjah Institute for Heritage (SIH) organized the seventeenth edition of the "Bisharat Al-Qayz" event under the slogan "Om Al Neqeea," on Wednesday at the institute's headquarters in the university city. The event was attended by Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Muslim, the institute's Chairman, and a number of heritage enthusiasts and children who interacted with various activities and events.
The event aims to introduce the new generations to the vocabulary of the local environment and document their relationships with their cultural heritage, which is essential in shaping their personalities and strengthening their sense of belonging. Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Muslim, said, "We are keen to organize this event annually during this time of the year, as it holds a special value and an important position in Emirati society, with a significant positive impact, especially for children and the new generations, by introducing them to the vocabulary of the local environment and documenting their relationships with their cultural heritage, which is essential in shaping their personalities and strengthening their sense of belonging. Many children were unaware of many aspects of heritage, so we took it upon ourselves to introduce them to various aspects of our heritage, including plants, trees, insects, and more. Additionally, we aim to enhance intergenerational communication and social cohesion by involving the elderly in the events, activities, and initiatives organized by the Sharjah Institute for Heritage."

Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Muslim explained that "Bisharat Al-Qayz" represents hope in life and deepening relationships between generations and between individuals, as it holds a significant presence in literature, stories, and tales. He pointed out that it is a joyful and exciting news that the bearer knows, as "Bisharat" (plural of "Bishara") is what the messenger brings, and it primarily refers to the first harvest from the date palm.

An exhibition on "Bisharat Al-Qayz" was organized, along with a variety of distinctive and diverse workshops for children to enhance their cultural knowledge. Aisha Gabash, the director of events and activities at the Sharjah Institute for Heritage, emphasized that this year's "Bisharat Al-Qayz" program, themed around the "Mother of the Harvest" insect, was diverse and rich in activities with informative, cultural, and entertaining aspects. The program included a mini exhibition showcasing previous seasons' themes of "Bisharat Al-Qayz," as well as the execution of various distinctive workshops for children to enhance their cultural knowledge and raise awareness about the importance of heritage preservation. The children were introduced to the "Om Al Neqeea" insect through touch and visual communication, in addition to listening to heritage researchers who contributed to its introduction. The event represents a culture and customs preserved in the memory of successive generations regarding the traditions, images, and practices that Emiratis used to engage in during this season.

About the Om Al Neqeea insect:
According to storytellers, the Om Al Neqeea insect is present in most seasons, but it appears more frequently during the Qayz season and is abundant in palm farms. It belongs to the beetle family, is black in color, and was previously called the "burrower" because it burrows into parts of the palm tree and feeds on the fibers and the heart of the palm, causing damage.
