Sharjah Council Explores Labour Standards Authority's Roles

Sharjah24: The Health, Labour and Social Affairs Committee of Sharjah Consultative Council (SCC) reviewed the various activities, roles, and responsibilities of the Sharjah Labour Standards Development Authority.
This visit is part of the committee’s work for the first regular session of the eleventh legislative term, aimed at exploring plans and programmes in collaboration with relevant entities to enhance the professional environment and the psychological well-being of the workforce, and to address topics of social importance.

The council delegation from the Health, Labour and Social Affairs Committee included Mohamed Saleh Al Ali, Chairman of the Committee, along with members Dr. Hind Saleh Al Hajri, the Committee Rapporteur, Dr. Ruqaya Rashid Al Zaabi, Issa Abdul Rahim Al Zarouni, Ali Salem Al Shamsi, and Ahmed Salem Hamidi Al Ketbi. From the General Secretariat of the Council, Abdulaziz Ahmed Bin Khadim, Deputy Director of Parliamentary Affairs, and Islam Al Shiyouki, Media Expert, were present.

The committee was welcomed by Sheikh Mohammed bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Labour Standards Development Authority, Faisal Rashid Al Shamsi, Director of Labour Market Standards and Systems, Omar Mohammed Al Salman, Director of the Legal Affairs Office, Miera Mohammed Al Madfa, Director of Strategy and Corporate Excellence, Abdullah Ali Bouhendi from the Coordination and Follow-up Office, and Fatima Mohammed Al Jarwan, Secretary of the Authority.

At the beginning of the visit, Mohamed Saleh Al Ali, Chairman of the Committee, conveyed greetings from the Chairman of the Council, the Secretary-General, and the members to the Chairman of the Labour Standards Development Authority and its entire staff for their efforts in supporting the labour market system in Sharjah and ensuring its adaptation to society and current laws. He noted that the committee, in this first parliamentary session of the Consultative Council, prioritised visiting the Authority to understand its roles and enhance its powers to create an attractive work environment for workers and employers in Sharjah, a vital priority within the emirate’s policies.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Authority, explained the establishment of the authority following the issuance of Law No. (1) of 2022 by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, concerning the reorganisation of the Labour Standards Development Authority in Sharjah. He emphasised the Authority's integrated efforts to achieve a prosperous labour market.

He highlighted that the establishment of the Authority reflects His Highness’s interest in ensuring an exceptional and attractive work environment for workers and employers while promoting awareness and compliance with labour laws and standards, safeguarding workers' rights, and protecting employers' interests.

The visit included an overview of the Authority’s goals and activities and its diligent efforts to ensure labour accommodation standards meet the best practices, following extensive monitoring of living conditions across various labour categories. The Authority also focuses on drafting legislation, regulations, and systems related to labour and accommodation standards after thorough and careful studies.

The meeting concluded with discussions on various vital topics related to the labour sector, including reviewing the Authority's reports, observations on the labour market in the emirate, and proposals and recommendations for the council. Future strategies for developing the sector were also discussed.

Committee members emphasised the importance of intensifying joint efforts between the council and the Authority and directing plans towards a better labour environment and supervising labour accommodation to ensure compliance with standards.
