Sharjah24: Al Qasimi Hospital in Sharjah, a leading healthcare facility under the Emirates Healthcare Group, achieved a unique medical milestone. The hospital's medical team successfully performed a precise catheterisation procedure using an innovative technique not globally documented on a 65-year-old patient suffering from acute bleeding in the aorta.
Upon admission to the Accident & Emergency department of Al Qasimi Hospital, the patient presented severe chest pain and significantly elevated blood pressure. Following necessary emergency assessments, physicians diagnosed a fissure and bleeding in the aorta. The medical team faced significant challenges due to the patient's unstable condition, discovery of a genetic anomaly in the aorta and its branches, complicating the procedure further.
Dr. Aarif Al Nooryani, CEO of Al Qasimi Hospital in Sharjah and Head of Cardiology and Cardiac Catheterisation, emphasised the complexity and precision of the open-heart surgery and aorta repair due to the patient's unstable condition and the presence of trapped blood, which could result in sudden bleeding, adding considerable difficulty in managing the case via open-heart surgery.
Dr. Zaki Al Mazki, Head of Vascular Surgery, highlighted the successful stabilisation of the patient's condition by the medical team in preparation for the surgical procedure under his supervision. The surgery was conducted by Dr. Adel Al Aswad, Consultant Thoracic and Vascular Surgeon at the hospital, with oversight from the hospital's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Samia Abdul Latif Al Zarouni, and Head of Vascular Surgery, Dr. Zaki Al Mazki. The catheterisation procedure was performed using an innovative and globally undocumented technique, ultimately saving the patient's life despite a procedure risk reaching 90%.
The patient has fully recovered, stabilised, discharged from intensive care, and returned to normal life. This achievement opens new avenues for treating cardiac conditions with innovative and safe methods, contributing to enhancing the concept and tools of healthcare.
