For its seventh edition, the prize has outlined the topics as "Verified Linguistic Heritage Books Across All Branches of Arabic Language Sciences" for linguistic studies and "Specialized Dictionaries in Humanities and Legal Sciences" for lexicographical studies. These themes aim to aid researchers and students in accessing accurate and endorsed meanings and definitions for terms used in these disciplines, contributing to the enrichment of the historical linguistic heritage of Arabic language sciences.
The total prize amount of $100,000 will be evenly divided between the winners of linguistic and lexicographical studies, with each first-place winner in each category receiving $30,000, and each second-place winner receiving $20,000.
Alteration in Prize Conditions:
In a bid to motivate scholars and researchers in linguistic knowledge domains, the Sharjah Prize for Linguistic and Lexicographical Studies has opted to accept research and studies published from January 2015 to July 2024. The condition stipulating "no more than seven years passing since the publication of the book" has been extended to "nine years" to encourage researchers to continue enriching knowledge and advancing Arabic linguistic knowledge and lexicographical sciences.
Themes Emphasising the Profundity of Arabic Language:In response to the commencement of registration for this year's edition, Dr. Mohammad Safi Al Mostaghanemi, Secretary General of ALA, expressed, "The Sharjah Prize for Linguistic and Lexicographical Studies mirrors Sharjah's vision, guided by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. It demonstrates the commitment to support the Arabic language, enhance its standing, acknowledge outstanding research, and motivate researchers to persist in advancing linguistic and lexicographical knowledge."
He further stated, "The prize's focal points underline the profound nature of Arabic and the richness inherent in its sciences and knowledge. Authenticated linguistic heritage books represent a valuable knowledge source, meticulously capturing language nuances, depicting its evolution and applications. This contribution enriches the Arabic library with the insights of early scholars who laid the groundwork for linguistic categorisation. Additionally, specialised dictionaries in humanities and legal sciences play a pivotal role in precisely and comprehensively defining terms in these fields. They contribute to the advancement of cognitive content for specialised dictionaries, acting as a crucial resource for researchers and aiding in establishing accurate linguistic standards when addressing these subjects."
To be eligible for the prize, books must be printed, published, and include international numbering. The prize does not consider research published in peer-reviewed journals. Moreover, the submitted work should not have received similar accolades, and candidates cannot apply to both categories or submit more than one work. Previous winners of the Sharjah Prize for Linguistic and Lexicographical Studies can reapply only after a five-year interval. Printed copies should be sent via registered mail to the Sharjah Arabic Language Academy.
