Sharjah Social Services celebrates World Mental Health Day

Sharjah24: On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, the Sharjah Social Services Department (SSSD) organised its third mental health symposium, under the motto “Health and Wellness for All,” at the Sharjah Research Technology and Innovation Park (SRTI Park).
During the symposium’s opening speech, Maryam Al Qaseer, Director of the Social Education Department, stressed the necessity of raising awareness regarding the importance of mental health, calling for cooperating in spreading the message for the people to lively happily.

Mental health of the elderly
Dr. Salwa Al Suwaidi, Consultant in Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine, discussed how to enhance the mental health of the elderly, psychological crises, the relationship between the elderly and mental illnesses such as depression, dementia or Alzheimer’s, and risk factors related to mental health problems in the elderly, such as social, psychological and biological factors and common stereotypical life stressors.

Children’s mental health
Dr. Amal Abdel Mawla, Director of Al Firdous Center for Rehabilitation People of Determination in Sharjah and Mental Health Consultant, discussed the issue of family stability and its correlation to children’s mental health, in addition to the role of the family in moral and religious education, and finding a balance between work and family.

Quality of life
In turn, Maryam Al Qaseer discussed the role of mental health in achieving quality of life, meaning that the individual’s satisfaction with various aspects of his life, a critical turning point in developing societies. She added that making decisions, social relationships, dealing with stress, and emotional balance affect the quality of life.

Occupational pressure
For her part, Dr. Noura Qanifa, a Sociology Professor at the University of Sharjah, discussed the issue of occupational stress and mental health, the necessity of maintaining the balance between them, and the negative effects of occupational stress on the individual.

Early treatment of a psychiatric patient
Dr. Issam Samaha, a psychiatrist, addressed the issue of mental illness, the necessity of early treatment, and misconceptions among members of society. He stressed the need to treat psychological conditions early and not feel ashamed, for it is like any other physiological disease.
