Sharjah 24: Upon dialing the number 800700, seniors aged 60 and above in Sharjah can access a range of services from the main line of the Sharjah Social Services Department (SSSD) while staying comfortably at their homes.
The Seniors’ Services Centre, an integral part of the department and with a 20-year history, is dedicated to meeting the diverse needs of elderly residents within their own homes.
This initiative is backed by the wise leadership of the Emirate of Sharjah, ensuring seniors receive the necessary support, care, and an array of services right at their doorstep.
Khulood Al Ali, Director of the Seniors’ Services Centre, elucidated the centre's role, which extends not only to on-site services for seniors, disabled individuals, and psychiatric patients, benefiting 4538 individuals in total. Al Ali stressed the centre's dynamic approach, adapting services to societal changes and technological advancements. Their commitment lies in affording seniors the care and attention they rightfully deserve.
Al Ali highlighted the centre's significant contributions to the elderly community. Commencing as a home care endeavour in 2003, initially linked to a seniors' care facility, this pioneering effort became the nation's first home care service, acknowledging the esteemed status of seniors in the Emirate of Sharjah. Guided by superiors, the centre consistently strives to meet seniors' needs and requests, ensuring their optimal well-being through dedicated care.
In this context, Al Ali emphasised Emirate's distinctiveness in seniors’ services. Leading initiatives guided by higher directives has propelled the evolution of home care management from 2003 to 2023, culminating in the establishment of the comprehensive Seniors’ Services Centre.
The range of services offered at the centre encompasses in-home care, tailored to seniors (60 and above), disabled individuals, and psychiatric patients who are citizens of the Emirate.
Medical services encompass doctor visits, nursing, physical therapy, laboratory services, and medication provision. A specialised psychiatrist is available, alongside dental care services.
Among the newer services introduced is the "Mishwar" initiative, a home-based social service catering to the transportation needs of seniors.
Another recent addition is the "Ijaba" service, incorporating identity card and health card renewals, bill payments, and transaction processing for added convenience.
The "Virtual Companion" service, designed for solitary seniors, involves the installation of a sizable screen at their residence. This facilitates communication with a designated nurse through a specific app on their phone, allowing them to interact and ensure their well-being.
