The Heritage Committee of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) added the Heart of Sharjah site, including Sharjah Fort, to the list of heritage in the Islamic world, which was happened at the committee's last meeting hosted by the city of Rabat, Kingdom of Morocco, on the fourth of July last year.
The Sharjah Archaeology Authority had submitted integrated files for the nomination of the "Sharjah: Trucial States Gate" file to the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) on July 25, 2021 , which dealt with the archaeological, historical and artistic value of the nominated site, in addition to the distinctive urban and architectural characteristics and value of the site's elements and reports of its preservation.
During the celebration, Dr. Sabah Abboud Jassim, Director General of the Sharjah Archaeology Authority, delivered a speech expressing his thanks and appreciation to His Highness, the Ruler of Sharjah, for his generous interest in everything related to antiquities in the emirate, which had a great impact on achieving the continuous achievements and including them in the lists of world heritage.
Dr. Sabah Abboud Jassim confirmed that the authority works according to well-studied goals in protecting the cultural heritage of the Emirate of Sharjah, which requires teamwork and real solidarity including individuals,- society, relevant government agencies and institutions.
The Director General of the Sharjah Archaeology Authority congratulated His Highness, the Ruler of Sharjah, for the inclusion of new numbers of sites on the world cultural and heritage lists of UNESCO, by saying :” We congratulate His Highness, the Ruler of Sharjah, for the culmination of the efforts of the Sharjah Archaeology Authority on Monday in achieving a new accomplishment for the Emirate by including four cultural archaeological sites on the preliminary list of the World Heritage of UNESCO, which reflect the important and unique role of this region, and these sites are :
1. The site of Mleiha, the pre-Islamic period in southeastern Arabia.
2. The location of the rock carvings in Al Khutm and Khorfakkan.
3. The site of Wadi Al Helo, as evidence of copper mining in the Bronze Age in the Arabian Peninsula.
4. The location of the prehistoric cultural scene in Jabal Al Faya .
The Director General of the Sharjah Archaeology Authority concluded his speech by stressing the great cooperation with international institutions such as the Islamic World Organization for Education, Science and Culture, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, as this cooperation comes within the framework of the Authority’s strategy for the preservation of the tangible cultural heritage of the Emirate and its participation with the world by highlighting these sites and register them on international lists to introduce them locally, regionally and internationally.
For his part, His Excellency Dr. Salem bin Muhammad Al-Malik delivered a speech expressing his thanks and appreciation to His Highness, the Ruler of Sharjah, for his great and unlimited interest in heritage and culture and for supporting institutions working in this field.
The ceremony was attended Sheikh Fahim bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Head of the Department of Government Relations, Mohammed Obaid Al Zaabi, Head of the Protocol and Hospitality Department, Dr. Obaid Al Hajri, Director of the Regional Office of ISESCO in Sharjah, and a number of experts, scholars and academics specialized in antiquities.
