The department also focuses, through its Sharjah Age Friendly City Office, on implementing the global standards emanating from the Global Network of Age-friendly Cities and Communities, of which Sharjah is an active member. In this context, and through its cooperation with the Sharjah Economic Development Department and the Sharjah Cooperative Society, the SSSD was able to support projects of citizens and owners of farms and agricultural products to sell their products by coordinating with markets, cooperative societies and supermarkets by providing them with free- of charge shelves to display and sell their products.
Abdullah Al Mahmoud, Director of the Support Services Department at the Sharjah Economic Development Department, which is the main partner of the SSSD in implementing this project, said that this project was initiated 3 years ago and will continue for the coming years, as a group of senior farmers are being targeted in the city of Sharjah, the Central and Eastern Regions.
Al Mahmoud also revealed that the number of beneficiaries of the initiative reached 21 farmers during 2022, expressing his admiration for the increase in the number since the launch of the initiative and the high demand of citizens among farmers.
In the same context, Asmaa Al-Khudari, Director of the Age-friendly Cities Office, said that the initiative to support senior citizens’ projects is consistent with one of the standards of the the Global Network of Age-friendly Cities and Communities. She added that the office began to pay attention to this economic aspect, which is no less important than other aspects in the lives of senior citizens, because they can be economically and financially independent, not to mention our great confidence in their ability to produce, give, and provide services, and that they are effective and productive elements in society despite their advanced age.
