Sharjah24: To bolster the international presence and visibility of literary works from the Arab world, the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) spotlighted the English translations of 59 Emirati and Arab authors as part of the Sharjah Market Focus programme at the 49th London Book Fair (LBF).
These books were translated into English under the directives and support of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and in partnership with the Emirates Writers Union.
The initiative follows the success of previous similar endeavours whereby SBA had translated the works of Emirati and Arab authors, playwrights, poets, and intellectuals into Russian, French, Italian and Portuguese during Sharjah’s Guest of Honour celebrations at international book fairs in Sao Paulo, Paris, and Turin, amongst others.
Commenting on the translated works, HE Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, Chairman of SBA, said: "The translation initiative spotlights the works of distinguished Emirati and Arab creatives globally and reflects the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, to support and increase the visibility of the Emirati and Arab literary legacy to a wider segment of global readers, and build bridges of cooperation between the Arab culture and its counterparts worldwide."
The SBA Chairman added: "Emirati and Arab authors and intellectuals are the best representatives to showcase the values, ideals and rich legacy of the Arab culture. Today at LBF, we are reaping the fruits of our initiatives as we witness firsthand the keen interest of international publishers and institutions to present the works of Emirati and Arab authors to their readers around the world."
For his part, Sultan Al Amimi, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Emirates Writers Union, said: “In line with our goals, the Emirates Writers Union is keen on supporting the translation of Emirati literature into international languages to bolster the presence of Emirati authors at international cultural forums." He pointed out that the partnership with SBA has enhanced the Union's journey in fulfilling its goals.
