Sharjah 24: Under the strategic plan devised by the executive office of the Sharjah Age-Friendly City Programme 2021-2023, the Sharjah authorities have been keen to meet the criteria set for joining the World Health Organisation (WHO)’s Global Network of Age-friendly Cities and Communities. This is being achieved by launching effective initiatives that aim at developing the various services targeting the elderly in all sectors in the Emirate.
As many as 46 activities have been taken up by the various Sharjah government institutions taking part in the Sharjah Age-Friendly City Programme including outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation, housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and employment, communication and information, community support, and health services.

The overall achievement rate of the strategic plan for joining the WHO’s Global Network of Age-friendly Cities and Communities in 2021 was 31%. By joining the Global Network, Sharjah seeks to empower the elderly, effectively integrate them into the society, and provide them with adequate quality services according to the global best practices, and raise the society’s awareness of the demographic changes that are favourable to the elderly.

Following the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the executive office of Sharjah Age-Friendly City Programme works to implement and consolidate the human rights standards and principles in the Emirate for the elderly. His Highness Ruler of Sharjah has been sparing no effort to provide decent livelihoods for all segments of society, putting Sharjah on the global map and leading by example, added the statement from the executive office.

The Sharjah Age-Friendly City Programme executive office works with various stakeholders and government and private institutions to promote creative ideas that contribute to the development of the overall environment surrounding the elderly. The executive office works to ensure the active participation of the elderly in the Emirate’s development process by making the best use of their capabilities and experience and facilitating the best possible services to them.
