Sharjah 24: Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) announced today the start-up of the trial operation of the first gas-fired power plant with a capacity of 345 MW within the expansion project of Al Layyeh power plant to generate electricity.
The plant’s development and expansion project consists of two M701F gas turbines with a capacity of 345 MW per unit; two heat recovery boilers; and a 336 MW steam turbine with a combined total efficiency of more than 60% of the overall capacity.  The total cost of the project amounts to 2 billion dirhams.

Saeed Sultan Al Suwaidi, Chairman of SEWA, confirmed that the expansion project of Al Layyeh power plant to generate electricity with a total capacity of 1026 megawatts realises the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the Federation and Ruler of Sharjah, to meet the demand for electricity and keep pace with the industrial, commercial and residential development in the Emirate of Sharjah.

Saeed Sultan Al Suwaidi pointed out that SEWA is working to develop power generation plants in accordance with the 2030 strategy to increase the installed capacity to 4600 megawatts and raise the operational efficiency to more than 60%, which has the greatest impact on reducing carbon emissions and preserving energy resources.

Engineer Issa Al Suwaidi, Director of the Electricity Production Department at SEWA, explained that the authority has been cooperating since 2018 with the alliance of Mitsubishi Energy of Japan and Elsewedy Electric to develop and expand Al Layyeh plant with since November 2021 in cooperation with a contractor and project consultant to ensure the quality of the units' work and the stability of the electrical network. The project is expected to be completed in January 2023.
