SAF launches “Oral History” initiative

January 10, 2022 / 9:19 PM
Sharjah 24: Sharjah Art Foundation has announced the launch of "Oral History" project to document Sharjah's historic districts' social, urban, and architectural history.
The project seeks to learn more about the social and urban realities of Sharjah's ancient districts of Al Mareija, Al Shoikh, and Al Shuwaihean, as few written or documented sources exist that address the enormous transformations which these areas have experienced in recent decades.

Sheikha Noora Al Mualla, Director of Learning and Research at Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF), explained the project to “Sharjah 24”: "Since the foundation's inception in 2009, working with the local community and engaging with Sharjah's urban fabric has been essential to our work, so through this project, we hope to expand the sphere of our understanding of the history of these areas, which is based on the memories and voices of those who have lived there."

People over the age of 60 who have lived or worked in these communities are invited to relate their life stories before, during, and after the many periods of change and growth. Those who desire to participate can contacting the research team directly at [email protected].
