Sharjah 24: Teams from the Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah (EPAA) launched an awareness campaign for visitors to wilderness areas along Al Rahmaniya Street from 5:00 till 8:00 pm. The initiative took place in cooperation with the Sharjah Social Services Department and the General Commander of Sharjah Police, and the Sharjah Municipality, the Sharjah Broadcasting Authority, and the environmental management company Bee'ah, and Al Rahmaniya Suburb Council, as well as a group of volunteers.
The launch of the awareness campaign was attended by Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the EPAA, Obaid Saeed Al Tunaiji, Director General of Sharjah City Municipality, Ahmed Abdullah Al Matroushi, Chairman of the Rahmaniyah Suburb Council, and Maryam Al Qaseer, Director of the Department of Social Education and the work teams accompanying them and from other cooperating parties.

The initiative comprised a comprehensive agenda, which included a cleaning campaign, a mechanism for disposing of barbecue charcoal, In addition to distributing awareness boxes for visitors to wilderness areas, which contain all the information and laws important to them, as well as the sharing of awareness tips. It was well received by all participants and attendees.

Raising community environmental awareness
Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the EPAA, said: “We are always keen to organize and implement awareness campaigns and initiatives to clean up natural areas. Such activities play a vital role in raising environmental awareness and highlighting the importance and necessity of keeping natural areas clean and unpolluted. The EPAA’s agenda and strategy are based on the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and we pride ourselves on implementing His Highness’s directives regarding the environment, including its protection, preservation, cleanliness, and sustainability. In addition, we adhere to and comply with the decisions of the Executive Council regarding the prevention of environmental degradation.”

Al Suwaidi pointed out that the law prohibits the practice of activities that violate the provisions of federal and local legislation regulating the protection of the environment. These laws are in place to prevent any harm to wilderness areas that could cause their deterioration and that could negatively affect visitors to and inhabitants of these areas.

Preserving the beauty of wilderness areas 
The campaign was aimed at raising awareness among visitors to the wilderness areas of the importance of preserving the beauty of these areas, and to educate them about the dangers of negative behaviors, such as the disposal of barbeque charcoal, and its impact on the environment. In addition, the campaign aimed to teach visitors about positive behaviors to help preserve vegetation from environmental degradation, while also encouraging them to enjoy nature.

A carefully crafted and effective plan 
The awareness campaigns organized by the Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah take place in accordance with a carefully crafted plan with clear objectives, indicating the importance and status of wilderness areas and the need to preserve and protect them. This campaign, as with others hosted by the Authority, was very well received and the positive response from visitors and participants showcases the public’s keenness to protect and preserve the environment.

The EPAA seeks to protect the environment, natural reserves, wildlife, and their biodiversity through scientific studies and research. The authority publishes educational awareness material, implements policies for environmental awareness and programs, and launches specialized campaigns in the field of environmental awareness and education.
