Sharjah 24: Around 3000 students from schools affiliated to Sharjah Education Council (SEC) and Sharjah Private Education Authority (SPEA), along with their fellow students from Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS), participated in the exciting event “Childhood Thon”, on Monday, November 22, 2021, organised by SCHS Early Intervention Centre, under the auspices of Sharjah Sports Council, in Khalid bin Mohammed Stadium celebrating the Early Intervention Week, celebrated annually in conjunction with the official opening of SCHS, on November 26, 1993.
The event was attended by the Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police, Major General Saif Al Zari Al Shamsi, His Excellency Issa Hilal Al Hazami, Chairman of the Sharjah Sports Council, His Excellency Abdul Malik Muhammad Jani, Vice Chairman of the Sharjah Sports Council, a number of city officials and a large audience.
The activities of “Childhood Thon” were launched under the supervision of dozens of volunteers from SCHS. The students participated in competitions, which included simulations of disability with the aim of integrating and consolidating cooperation between SCHS and community institutions in accordance with international best practices.
Mohamed Fawzy, Director of the Early Intervention Centre, confirmed that the main objective of “Childhood Thon” is to integrate children with disabilities with their non-disabled peers and raise their awareness to accept differences, communicate with respect and provide support when needed.
Mohamed Fawzy explained that the Early Intervention Centre organises the event for the third time, whereas the first was hosted by Al Majaz Waterfront in 2017, the second time was in 2019 on the Flag Island. Mr. Mohamed Fawzy added that this year edition was organised at Khalid bin Mohammed Stadium confirming the importance of raising awareness of the issues of persons with disabilities and their right to integration and education in accordance with the international best practices.
Mohamed Fawzy stated that Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services is playing a pioneering role, as it was the first to introduce the service of early detection and intervention in the region, through the Early Intervention Centre, pointing out that the services provided by the centre are considered appropriate educational, preventive and curative interventions at an early stage. He concluded that parents must realise the importance of early detection, intervention, and the continuous follow-up to achieve the best results.
