Sharjah24 – Reuters: With gypsum, pieces of coloured glass, some plaster paste and hundreds of hours of work, members of Al-Aqsa Reconstruction committee are busy renovating the iconic stained-glass windows of the Al-Aqsa mosque.
The windows were damaged in the recent clashes that erupted in Jerusalem between Palestinians and Israeli forces, according to the Islamic Waqf in Jerusalem.
Work on one window takes up to 6 months of carving gypsum, installing pieces of stained glass and sealing the glass in place with a plaster paste.
The windows of the Al-Aqsa Mosque form an integral part of the mosque's Islamic architecture, showing artistic motifs that contain Qur'anic verses, prophetic hadiths and other phrases, in addition to precise geometric shapes.
The fifty-six decorated windows allow sunlight at sunrise and sunset to infiltrate the Qibli Mosque, flooding the mosque with bright colours.
The windows of Al-Qibli Mosque have two designs for each side, one exterior designed with geometric shapes of transparent glass and gypsum and the other interior decorated with coloured glass with shapes of plants and geometric drawings.
