Sharjah24 – Reuters: The Tunisian island of Djerba is home to what is said to be the largest crocodile park in the country where more than 800 crocodiles are raised, attracting tourists from all over the world.
The park, called ‘Djerba Explore’, first opened in 2002, and is one of the most famous tourist destinations on the island where visitors get to see different kinds of crocodiles, some of which are considered the largest in Africa reaching a length of 6 metres and a weight of 1,000 kg, guide at the park, Mohammed Bayahi said.

There were nearly 400 crocodiles in the farm when it was first opened, most of which were brought from Madagascar. The number has doubled since then as a result of artificial hatching.

Many countries buy crocodiles from the farm including France, Morocco and the UAE.

The farm is also home to other reptiles including snakes and lizards.

While popular with tourists, it is also a destination for researchers and students wishing to deepen their understanding of reptiles.

Supervisors at the park hope it will see a spike in visitors in the near future after it was negatively impacted by COVID-19 restrictions over the past two years.
