Sharjah24 – Reuters: At a small workshop in Bahrain, Mohammed Al Shughul sits at a pottery wheel, slowly shaping wet clay into a large vase.
Al-Shughul, who lives in Al A’ali –a village known for pottery-making, says the craft has been in his family for generations.

“I was born into the pottery-making profession. My family has been in the business for a long time. Pottery is an old profession in Bahrain, it is known in Al A’ali, and I learned the craft from my father,” he said.

The potter uses a mixture of local and imported sand to create the best quality pots, which he then sells to merchants.

His workshop, the Jaffar Al Shughul workshop, produces between 200-500 pots a month, which vary from decorative items to plates and coolers for daily use.

As well as producing pottery, it holds courses for school children to learn this craft, ensuring the tradition continues in future generations.

The craft of clay-making has been an integral part of Bahraini culture for centuries.

A merchant who sells products from Al Shughul’s workshop says they are especially popular with tourists.
