Sharjah24 – Reuters: In a modest Bahraini home in the year 1850, a young Hussain Showaiter had the idea of creating his own version of Halwa - a sweet confectionery widely spread throughout the Middle East.
Currently, more than 170 years later, this little idea has transformed into a large Halwa factory, with dozens of employees producing one of the country’s most notable desserts.
Run by Hussain’s sons and grandsons, the family is adamant on maintaining the traditions that made the sweet so popular. General manager of the shop, Muhanna Showaiter, can often be found alongside his employees mixing the thick mixture of sugar, nuts and saffron.
“The idea that they had - the days of my grandfather and the days of my father and my uncle God rest his soul, was that we want people to come to Bahrain, to visit Bahrain, and to take a piece of Bahrain with them - that’s buying the Halwa - from Bahrain to make it unique,” he said.
While sticking close to tradition, the company has also embraced the use of new technologies that have helped increase their output. They have recently begun selling their products online.
