Sharjah24: Knowledge without Borders (KwB), a Sharjah-based cultural initiative, hosted Emirati author Khaled Al Suwaidi at a literary session themed, ‘Cloud Talk’, at the newly-opened scenic Al Suhub Rest House in Khorfakkan on Thursday, September 23, 2021.
Speaking about the history and role of satire in social criticism, Khaled Al Suwaidi – Emirati author of five novels and short story collections, who also contributes regularly to key publications – shared his personal experiences in addressing social issues. The author also emphasised the important role reading played in shaping his literary career.

During the session moderated by Mariam Al Hammadi, Manager of KwB, Al Suwaidi discussed the concepts and key characteristics of satire in both Arabic and world literature. Illuminating his discussion with examples of the most celebrated satirical works in Arabic, the author pointed out Al Jahiz’s Al Bukhala (The Book of Misers) as a masterpiece in this genre. He also cited the satirical turn of mind of Russian author, Anton Chekhov, who is one of the greatest short story writers of all time.  

The KwB guest clarified the differences between satire and dark comedy in literature, and distinguished satire from sarcasm and irony in everyday conversations. In conclusion, he emphasised
