Sharjah 24: Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) issued a report on their experience through SCHS Masarat Centre for Development and Empowerment, to employ people with disabilities.
SCHS employed 417 people with disabilities, from 1989 to 2021, in government and private institutions.
SCHS Masarat Centre for Development and Empowerment provides its services to people with disabilities, over 16 years old, and to their parents.
The Centre aims to empower people with disabilities, through direct services of education, therapy, and rehabilitation in addition to job placement.
SCHS Masarat Centre for Development and Empowerment seeks to empower government and private sector institutions to achieve common goals by providing various services to develop the skills of job seekers and qualify them for the labour market.
Her Highness Sheikha Jameela bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Director General of SCHS, confirmed that the United Arab Emirates has put in place policies, laws and regulations that support the right of people with disabilities to work, despite such support, people with disabilities face many obstacles in the job market.
Her Highness added that among obstacles and challenges facing people with disabilities are the lack of the required skills to work, moreover, most institutions and entities are concerned to employ people with disabilities due to misconceptions about their abilities and skills.
Her Highness Sheikha Jameela bint Mohammed Al Qasimi confirmed that SCHS aims to promote equal employment opportunities, as it provides a variety of pre and post-employment services, and support for job seekers, and for employees with disabilities and the institutions that employ them.
SCHS also provides services to people with disabilities seeking jobs such as career guidance, counseling, training programmes with different objectives, and internships.
SCHS provided advisory and support services to nearly 45 governmental and private entities in support of employing people with disabilities in the labour market until 2020. SCHS provided nearly 30 training workshops for its employees with disabilities until 2020.
SCHS Masarat Centre for Development and Empowerment conducted a survey on employees with disabilities working in SCHS to know their opinion on their work experience and skills they acquired, as many of them expressed that work positively impacted their lives as they became more sociable and developed skills on the practical and personal levels.
