Sharjah 24: Rahmania Mall, a Sharjah Cooperative Society development, is a 60,000 square metre community shopping destination in Sharjah that is on a mission to spread awareness amongst the community on the importance of sustainability.
Rahmania Mall, which opened its doors to the public on 15th March 2021, has been built to maintain sustainability as per global practises, and has implemented a number of environmentally friendly features and recycling and waste management initiatives in a bid to lower its carbon footprint and promote sustainable living to the Sharjah community.

Green thinking

Abdullah Al Huraimel, Executive Director of New Enterprises at Sharjah Cooperative Society, said, “Rahmania Mall underscores our commitment to the UAE’s long term sustainability goals. The mall has been developed to deliver a retail destination which addresses the Sharjah community needs, while maintaining sustainability by engaging visitors to lead an eco-friendly lifestyle.”

Al Huraimel added, “We have deployed a number of initiatives throughout Rahmania Mall, such as the use of LED and solar lighting, and our impressive treatment irrigation system where all wastewater is recycled back for irrigation. We are 100% committed to reusing and recycling wherever possible, with ‘green thinking’ at the forefront of our mission. Our sustainability journey is an ongoing effort, and we are proud of the initiatives we have implemented to promote sustainable living to all Sharjah residents and citizens.”

As part of its efforts to reduce landfill, Rahmania Mall’s waste management system follows the ethos of “reduce, recycle, reuse”. All wet waste produced within the mall will be run through a food digestion system which produces water. This water will then be used for the mall’s landscape irrigation system. The mall has also committed to recycling all aluminium, plastic, and paper that is collected in its 40 recycling bins, as well as cooking oil waste from restaurants and cafes.

Endorse sustainable living amongst the Sharjah community
The mall has been built with sustainability at the forefront of its vision, with terracotta tiles used for the building’s façade, which, as a natural stone, reduces all energy consumption inside the mall. Rahmania Mall has also been built with LED lighting spanning the façade and interior building, and the car parks are fitted with solar powered lights, all of which will reduce the mall’s overall electricity consumption. Meanwhile, all cleaning materials used by the mall’s maintenance team are eco-friendly and PH neutral chemicals. Electric vehicle users can take advantage of the charging points located at Rahmania Mall; another effort to promote and endorse sustainable living amongst the Sharjah community.
