Sharjah 24: The University Hospital of Sharjah (UHS) has made history after successfully performing a critical surgery on a woman patient who is in her 30s. The patient was suffering from congenital cervical stenosis, a condition characterized by a completely blocked cervix with severe pain and irregular menstrual cycle.
Her laboratory tests and X-rays confirmed that she had a congenital abnormality in the reproductive system with cervical dysgenesis and an absence of the cervix, leading to a complete cervix blockage and irregular menstrual cycle. The blockage prevented the menstrual blood from leaving the body and regressing into the abdominal cavity, resulting in the formation of blood bags, adhesions and peritonitis.
Prof. Dr. Mohamed Zayed, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist at UHS, and his team conducted an urgent and critical surgery on the patient. During the procedure, the medical team succeeded in connecting the uterus to the reproductive system and the patient was discharged from the hospital fully recovered in less than 48 hours post-surgery.
Only highly qualified international consultants and specialized doctors can perform this precise surgical intervention due to its difficulty and the need for accuracy. With this achievement, Dr. Zayed has shown once again his ability to lead such an extremely complex operation that comprises several stages.
Cervical dysgenesis is a congenital abnormality in the female reproductive system. It causes the patient to lose the cervix and the connection structure between the uterus and the vagina. The surgical intervention, which primarily aims to connect the uterus and the vagina, includes many precise steps and delicate procedures.
Dr. Ali Obaid Al Ali, Chief Executive Officer and Member of Board of Trustees, University Hospital of Sharjah, said: “As part of our continuous commitment to enhanced healthcare services, the UHS has made sure to employ only the best of the best in the medical field. Our team of doctors of various disciplines is well-respected. Our surgeons are particularly trained to perform delicate procedures and highly complex interventions as evidenced by this latest success story. We laud Dr. Zayed and his medical staff for the successful outcome of the operation achieved using the latest medical equipment. Because of their expertise, they have ended the patient’s suffering and enabled her to return to her normal life. She is set to recover in record time.”
The UHS is a leading health institution renowned for its exceptional medical expertise and application of the latest medical methodologies and practices. Its quest for excellence is part of its ambitious vision to become one of the leading providers of healthcare services at the local and regional levels.
